Those of you who missed the
November Man-Boy Breakfast missed one of the great presentations by media mogul
Carl D. West. Originally a denizen of Chatham his story was both real and
inspiring to all in attendance. I was of course again extremely disappointed
with the turnout. I'm looking for principals that see the value of their boys
participation in a "movement" designed to transform them into
engaged, effective learners (students). If the young men are encouraged to
attend and participate in our homework and projects they should begin to see
school (knowledge), as an opportunity for advancement and act accordingly.
The Breakfast is a monthly celebration of manhood, its joys and
responsibilities. Our speakers are an eclectic group of interesting, successful
men who grew up similarly to their audience and overcame the challenges of
poverty, single parent households, indifference to education etc. In sixteen
years it has become an award wining Saturday morning tradition because of the
successful partnership between CPS member schools and the Concerned Christian
Men. We all have a stake in these boys' education, by profession, love or our
tax dollars, make the Man-Boy Breakfast a monthly commitment to help maximize
our investment.

Electrical Construction Apprentice Program
I. B. E. W. Local 134 and the Electrical Contractors' Association sponsor an apprenticeship program in Cook County, Illinois
through the Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Trust (EJATT). EJATT has permission from the U.S. Department
of Labor to open a registration for new applicants for its Electrical Construction Program.
In the Electrical Construction Program, apprentices learn to install and maintain power, communications, and lighting systems
in commercial, industrial, and residential settings. Applicants who are selected into the program from this registration
will begin classes in 2012.

IDOT Engineering Academy
Dear Community Leader,
IDOT has established mentoring programs with schools throughout the state of Illinois to expose students to transportation careers and heighten the awareness of civil engineering as a career. Partnerships have been forged with School District 186 in Springfield, the Upward Bound Program in East St. Louis, numerous Chicago Public high schools and other suburban Chicago high schools. IDOT engineers spend time in the classroom and help lead hands-on activities with students.
Targeting youth is necessary to grow the diverse workforce we will need for the future. The Engineering Academy will help to increase awareness of careers in the transportation industry. We are grateful for the opportunity offer a Summer Engineering Academy at Ach Technical High School for two sessions, on July 27th through the 29th from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Session One and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Session Two.
The summer Engineering Academy is a 3 day hands-on program that teaches high school students to use math and science to solve real world problems in transportation and civil engineering. Our purpose is to introduce some of the real world challenges IDOT civil engineers face and prepare the students for career opportunities in the transportation industry.
We are asking for your help in reaching approximately 50 high school teens to register for the summer Academy. A flyer and registration form is attached with more information. Please keep in mind that the deadline to register is July 22, 2011. A flyer and student registration and parent consent form is attached for your convenience in sharing this information.

Michael Finley (NBA Veteran) and Shannon Brown (Los Angeles Lakers) are teaming up to present the WoodStars
Summer Carnival and Music Festival, an outdoor family carnival and music concert consisting of a soundstage, teen
summit and over 20 adult and children rides, games, concessions and vendors. The festivities will take place July 28-31,
2011 at Proviso East High School, 807 South 1st Avenue, Maywood, IL.
Finley and Brown host annual youth basketball camps, servicing over 700 youth combined each year. During the
annual camps, both Proviso East High School alumni recognized the conditions of the school, which is in dire need of
mechanical, technical, and cosmetic updates. It is the mission of The Michael Finley Foundation and The Shannon Brown
Foundation to raise funds to finance the upgrades and renovations necessary to preserve the integrity of the school district
they represent while giving them a facelift.
The fun-filled weekend will kick off with a teen summit on July 29th at 10:00 a.m. The summit will consist of a panel of
multiple celebrity guests discussing an array of teen issues and providing much needed knowledge about their respective
industries. Following the panel discussion will be lunch at 12:00 p.m. and carnival activities, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
While there will be a time allotment for lunch, meals will not be provided. Students are advised to pack lunches or
bring money to purchase lunch. The Michael Finley Foundation and The Shannon Brown Foundation will provide youth
participants with complementary carnival tickets and 1 bus to organizations with 35 or more participants. (First Come

Illinois Conservation Corps – SEEKING WORKERS!
The Illinois Conservation Corps is a six-month employment opportunity for people between the ages of 18-25.
Participants will work on public lands owned or leased by the IDNR. Young adult workers must be currently
unemployed and are eligible to work for up to six months. Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis.
Participants will work on public lands owned or leased by the IDNR. Young adult workers must be currently
unemployed and are eligible to work for up to six months. Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis.
Workers in this program assist State Park staff to maintain buildings and grounds, pick up litter, mow, cut weeds,
remove brush, patch concrete and asphalt road surfaces, issue camping permits and register state park campers.
Additionally, they may assist with security and fire patrol, trail building, tool/equipment maintenance, painting
and repair. They may also assist in the care and propagation of birds, clean bird pens, transport game to laying houses
or breeding areas at DNR’s three game farms. Workers may also operate hunter check stations and perform the
duties associated with the maintenance of buildings and grounds as identified above.

Techie Competition - Design an APP for your local government!

The Apps for Metro Chicago, IL competition is an unprecedented open gov software challenge.
We invite software developers, community groups, businesses and individuals to build apps that solve problems and improve services in Metro Chicago. Our goal in this three-phased competition is to increase government transparency by facilitating the building of software applications that are creative, useful, and designed for long-term impact.
Apps for Metro Chicago, Illinois is the first apps competition to be a collaborative effort among four governmental agencies. The City of Chicago, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, Cook County, and the State of Illinois are together providing an exceptional amount of open data, an unprecedented amount of technical assistance and unique efforts to help software developers team up with community organizations to build useful apps.
Any and all software applications are eligible as long as they are for a platform widely available to the public like the web, smart phones, and SMS.
Support for this competition comes from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition, the Motorola Mobility Foundation and The Chicago Community Trust.
