I am writing to let you know that the application for the 2011 Summer Program in the College of ACES at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is now available. Students in ninth through eleventh grade can learn more about the Research Apprentice Program and begin completing the online application at the following website: http://summerprograms.aces.illinois.edu/rap. The application also requires a short essay, high school transcript and teacher & counselor recommendation forms to be submitted by the deadline on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.
The qualifications for the program are for students to have a B average or higher (3.0 cumulative GPA or higher), be ranked in the top 25% of your class and to have an interest in math and science. The recommendations from a counselor and a science/ math teacher should indicate a sense of curiosity, ability to cooperate with others and good work ethic. And the student’s essay should describe an interest in learning more about the areas listed on the application: http://summerprograms.aces.illinois.edu/rap/rap1. Also, applicants are primarily from traditionally under-served ethnic minority groups and economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The Research Apprentice Program provides opportunities for career exploration and academic enrichment while students work on a team project during the first year. The second year, participants conduct a seven-week research project with a professor or graduate student mentor. The program takes place on the University of Illinois campus in Urbana-Champaign where participants live in dorms supervised by resident advisors. Participants in the program have the opportunity to learn about many of the possible careers they can pursue through the programs in the College of ACES including biological and environmental engineering, business, economics, animal sciences, plant biotechnology & molecular biology, human development& family studies, human nutrition, dietetics, food science, hospitality management, horticulture and environmental sciences. This website has the full list of ACES Majors: http://students.aces.illinois.edu/degrees/majors.
Please let me know if you or your students have any questions regarding the Research Apprentice Program or the application process.
Thank you,
