I would like to inform you about a significant and exciting summer employment opportunity. The Chicago Park District's TRACE (Teens Re-Imagining Art, Community & Environment) program promotes community engagement and Creative Activism among youth, using art as a tool to critically analyze and raise questions about the world they experience.
Each summer, TRACE offers a 6-week paid internship program for 45 teens (15 at three parks) that provides the opportunity for them to focus on a set of artistic skills and utilize them to create work on an issue of concern. In the past, youth have created performance, sculpture, digital media and design pieces about violence & safety, food access & justice, the great migration, definitions of family, and the use of natural urban spaces. This year the creative focus will be (again, 1 per park): Performance (protest songs, theater of the oppressed), Critical Media Literacy, and Urban Agriculture.
Chicago Park District is looking for 3 dynamic people to fill the counselor positions. While the official job title is "counselor" and they are looking for people who can support youth as allies, the position also requires a lot of workshop facilitation skills around life issues that are important to teens - gang violence, police brutality, juvenile incarceration, peer pressure, etc. They will be contracting with community members and organizations to educate youth on the areas of creative focus. The Counselors will be working very closely with these collaborators at their respective parks.
