Legal Issues Affecting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
The webinar is free but pre-registration is required.
Older adults are increasingly taking responsibility for raising grand-children or other relatives under 18. This presentation is focused on helping service providers to understand the legal options related to decision making authority for a relative under 18 and common issues related to access to public benefits and education.
Among the questions the presenters will answer:
· What is the difference between custody and guardianship?
· What are some considerations in choosing one over the other?
· What alternatives to custody and guardianship are available?
· How can my clients get medical coverage for their grandchildren?
· What cash and other public benefits might be available for my clients to help them meet the expenses of caring for their grandchildren?
· What can my clients do if they apply for these benefits and are turned down?
· What public benefits are available to help grandparents care for grandchildren with special needs?
· Do grandparents need guardianship in order to enroll their grandchildren in school?
· What options are available to grandparents who have been raising grandchildren but whose health prevents them from continuing to do so?
