In Our Seton Home Program
The Typical Candidate is…
- 11-13.5 years of age
- In 5th - 8th grade (will be an 8th grader for the 2011-2012 School Year)
- Performing poorly in school (i.e. lots of missing assignments)
- Aggressive towards peers and refusing to listen to teachers
- An isolated youth, appears depressed and stays to herself
- Having relational issues at home – fighting with siblings and parents
- Friendly with known gang members or “wanna bes”
- Engaging in risky behaviors – taking things, lying, leaving the house without permission, and problems with curfew
- Experiencing issues of loss – major life change - due to death of a loved one or divorce.
- Experiencing trauma – due to violence (gang violence, domestic violence, bullying, endemic stress, and abuse)
Seton Home Program for Middle School Girls…
· A ten-bed residential program
· Therapeutic care – offering youth access to individual, group and family therapy
· Provides access to public and private schools
· Provides extensive academic support - reading and math labs, book clubs, one-on-one tutoring, participation in the Executive Functions Program (the Neuroscience Department at Rush) and more…
· Located at the Girls Campus in the Beverly/Morgan Park area
The Results after a Year in Program…
· 98% of our young people advanced a grade level in school.
· 94% of our children who were failing their classes upon arriving at Mercy Home improved their grades to a “C” average or better.
· The youth gained an average of 1.6 years in math and/or reading
· 72% of our children overcame or lessened the problems that impacted their lives before coming to Mercy Home.
· 79% of our young people report a belief that they can achieve success in school despite great struggles with education in the past.
