What is POSSE?
Founded in 1989, Posse identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Posse extends to these students the opportunity to pursue personal and academic excellence by placing them in supportive, multicultural teams—Posses—of 10 students. Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. For 20 years, Posse partner colleges and universities have welcomed Posse Scholars onto their campuses. They have awarded an incredible $334 million in leadership scholarships to these young people and have seen their success not only as leaders on campus, but in these students’ 90 percent graduation rate. Posse’s incredible partners are investing time, energy and resources in the promotion of equity in education and social justice. They believe in the intelligence, talent and dreams of young people who might not always show up on their radar screens, and are giving them a chance to excel.
How can you nominate a student?
After School Matters has been awarded 10 slots - for ten nominees (which must be entered online by myself as the nominator for our organization.)
Your nominee MUST be a rising senior. Due to the size of our organization, I will only be able to accept two nominations per program maximum. You must complete the following and return to myself by no later than Friday, April 8th:
Complete Student Contact Information (25%)
+ After School Matters - Region and Program
+ First Name
+ Last Name
+ Full Address
+ Teens E-mail Address
+ Teens Telephone Number (or a number which is most permanent where they can receive a text or voicemail message.)
Additionally, please answer the following:
Q1. How has this student demonstrated that they have consistently progressed towards academic excellence? (25%)
Q2. How has this student demonstrated leadership within their school, community or family? (25%)
Q3. How do you know this student, for how long, and in what capacity? (25%)
What happens next?
I will be collecting nominations until April 8th and then scoring them based on the percentages listed above. The final determinations - or the ten nominees who are selected, will be a combination of both the highest scores and earliest responses.
Upon determining the students who will be nominated, I will enter their information onto the POSSE Foundation on-line system and follow up with a congratulations letter to those ten nominees directly. I will also send an E-mail notification to all Program Quality Staff
Those ten nominees will be required to attend an informational session at Gallery 37 - Centre for the Arts with myself and potentially a representative from POSSE Foundation to learn more about how to prepare for their interview process and a timeline for notification.
One final note: Since POSSE requires students to meet with their colleges weekly starting in January of their senior year, students who are recipients of the POSSE scholarship will not be eligible to participate in After School Matters their final spring semester (as POSSE scholars meet generally 4:00-7:00 PM on one week day.)
