Kids Off The Block to host 2nd Annual Safe Summer Bar-B-Que
Event aims to curb youth violence as the summer season officially begins
Chicago, IL - On Saturday, June 11th, 2011 Kids off the Block will host its 2nd Annual "Safe Summer Bar-B-Q" at Palmer Park, 211 East 111th street Chicago, IL 60628. The event will feature food, entertainment, and city wide youth agencies that offer resources/activities to youth and their parents such as community summer camps, recreation, health screenings, and information on obtaining summer work for youths. Partners include the City of Chicago, the Roseland Safety Networks, the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Police, and Chicago Public Schools.
The Bar-B-Q is being held as a kick off event to promote a safe summer for youth, a time when violent crimes typically peak. With the idea of engaging young people in a constructive and positive environment, KOB founder Diane Latiker hopes the event will offer an incentive to youth to pursue alternative means of conflict resolution as the summer wages on.
"I believe it's time our communities come together to offer positive activities and resources to youth that will keep them safe".
Kids off the Block hopes to present a united front with community partners and are currently seeking local businesses and community groups that would be interested in setting up a free table or booth to offer additional resources to area youth. At a time when unemployment is nearing historic levels and gun violence is spreading, we must give youth positive alternatives to the summer months.
Kids off the Block is a 501c3 organization whose mission is to provide at-risk, low income youth positive alternatives to drugs, gangs, truancy, violence and the juvenile justice system.
