Support Stable FY 2012 Funding for Drug Free Communities Support Program

Support Stable FY 2012 Funding for Drug Free Communities Support Program

May 3, 2011

BACKGROUND

Our collective advocacy for funding the Drug Free Communities (DFC) program at $95 million in FY 2011 paid off, and the program was not cut!

Congress is currently working on the FY 2012 budget, and your advocacy is needed again NOW.

ISSUE

The field must advocate for a funding level of $95 million for FY 2012 to ensure that there are enough funds to support approximately 70 new grants next year (which is roughly comparable to the number that is expected to be awarded in 2011). If less than $95 million is appropriated in FY 2012 the program will stall out and fund only a small fraction of those who apply. Therefore, to ensure the maximum number of new grants are awarded, it is critical that the field advocate for $95 million in FY 2012.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Using CADCA's CapWiz system, fax the sample letter to members of your congressional delegation to ask them to make a funding level of $95 million for the DFC one of their top appropriations priorities for FY 2012. YOUR FAX IS CRITICAL.  The more letters the members of your congressional delegation receive on this issue, the more likely they are to support funding this program at $95 million.

TIMING

Congress has already begun to work on appropriations issues for FY 2012. Please fax the members of your congressional delegation IMMEDIATELY to ask them to make stable funding for the DFC program one of their top appropriations priorities. CADCA will continue to monitor the DFC program as the appropriations process moves forward and will alert you when further action must be taken.

CADCA's fax system allows you to automatically fax CADCA's sample letter on this issue to your legislators from CADCA's website.  To send faxes to your legislators, go to http://capwiz.com/cadca/home/.

If you would like to personalize your letter with examples from your community, please email lhouff@cadca.org for a MS Word version of the sample letter.
