Webinar: Dealing With Gang Members

The Bureau of Justice Assistance’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center (NTTAC) invites you to participate in May’s webinar on gang relations, as part of our Second Tuesdays at 2 webinar series. The presentation will cover various techniques to establish rapport and develop trust with gang members. The session will also discuss the importance of understanding gang dynamics, signs, symbols and gang activity in your community. Attendees will learn how criminal justice and anti-gang professionals can be more effective when dealing with street gang members and the community. Finally, attendees will be given practical strategies for interagency collaboration and information sharing to reduce gang activity. This webinar will be presented by Victor Gonzalez.

Victor Gonzalez has 25 years of experience working with high-risk youth, including 21 years working directly with youth involved with Houston area gangs. His work included substance abuse intervention, recreation and various prevention/intervention programs. For six years, Victor worked as a gang intervention specialist and program manager for the Association for the Advancement of Mexican American’s Barrios Unidos Youth Program, the only state-funded gang intervention program in the 90’s, serving the heavily gang impacted East End.
Currently Victor serves as the Director of Program Services for the Mayor’s Anti Gang Office in Houston, Texas, where he has worked for 12 years. Victor is in charge of supervising the delivery of service for all gang-related programs in the Mayor’s Anti Gang Office; creating coordinating strategies and collaborations; assisting with policy recommendations for the city; and training gang intervention specialists in the office. Victor develops gang awareness training materials to educate law enforcement, school personnel, residents, community agencies and other professionals on how to deal with gangs. He also works as a consultant throughout the City of Houston, state of Texas and U.S. Additionally, he is an instructor/presenter for the Department of Justice Project Safe Neighborhoods Anti-gang Training Program, which is the flagship anti-gang training program for the Department of Justice
