Camp Kupugani Multicultural Summer Camp Newsletter (June 2011)

Hello!
Here in Western Illinois, we've been enjoying some nice
happy mud girl warm weather as we approach summer!  IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you intend to sign up for this summer's camp, please don't wait until it's too late ... you can check out availability here and register online here.  Facilitate a happy face!

Preparing the family for camp
Maximize the experience with these tips

Now's the time that your child is getting ready to go away, it's time to prepare the family crew to get ready as well.  Here are a few tips to help the whole family enjoy your child's summer camp experience.

The Younger Siblings
Younger brothers and sisters may become anxious about their sibling being gone. What you can do is to make special plans for the younger ones. They could attend a day camp or go on weekend excursions, or you could collaborate with friends who also have little ones for group games, sports or themed activities; you could start your own little mini-camp with neighbors!
Grandparents can also be a valuable resource while a child is away at camp.  Camp time can be an ideal time for the younger ones to spend some time with grandparents. Be sure to tell the little ones that soon they will have their turn to go away to camp.
Pointers for Pining Parents
As a parent, your behavior can help maximize your child's first time away. How you portray camp in the weeks leading up to departure is critical to your child's adjustment. Be positive, encouraging and NEVER make a deal for an early pick-up from camp.  That is a guaranteed recipe for failure.
Hopefully, you made the decision for overnight camp as a family.  So stick with the commitment.  Just let your child go and have a good time. Your child going to sleepover camp may experience first-time jitters. Learning to become comfortable away from home is one of the many reasons for going to camp in the first place.
Helping Discuss Spot's transition
Domesticated animals love routine. Dogs sitting by the front door on cue for the scheduled walk or your cat's habitual mid-day snooze on the sofa; rabbits, hamsters, even fish, all are used to routine. A change in routine can impact your pet's disposition.
But, animals do not rationalize the way humans do. But you don't want to send letters or emails like, "Fluffy is so depressed that you're gone-she won't eat-everyone is missing you so much."  Instead, it's better to frame positive messages like, "Fluffy is spending her days digging in the garden or harassing the neighbor's cat, and hey honey, what's going on at camp?"
It's All Good...Relax!
Remember, camps accredited by the American Camp Association have a proven record for the highest standards of professional practice, health and safety, caring and capable leaders, and beneficial programs for children. So relax and let the magic of summer camp happen for your child.

We're Green and Getting Greener!
As part of our process of engendering respect for the natural environment, we continue to make our camp processes “greener.” After receiving a recent grant from our county, we've enhanced our recycling program, including composting. We use many organic cleaning products in camp; we continue to get our eggs from the local producer (Phil's Fresh Eggs); we have sodas without high fructose corn syrup (Blue Sky and Hansen's) in our La Tienda camp store; and we have commissioned from a local farmer to get beef from cruelty-free and artificial hormone-free cows (Sumner View Angus Farm).  With each passing year, it becomes more important to incorporate into our own lives critical practices that will allow our Earth to sustain itself for our children and their children.

At Camp
Kupugani, environmental awareness and respect for the natural environment is one of the core values that we emphasize at camp. We take seriously our relationship with the environment and convey that attitude to our campers. In addition to providing learning opportunities through experiential education, we teach the campers service to the environment by modeling good practices that are respectful of the world in which we live. We see camp as an opportunity to teach children about their natural environment and provide an antidote to “nature-deficit disorder.” Valuing the natural world, we seek and appreciate what is real, genuine, and non-artificial. The whole point of our camp is to enjoy nature, facilitate communication, and empower children by developing those skills.

Kupugani for Boys On the Way!

Complementing our successful multicultural camp for girls—a unique program that promotes diversity and empowerment of young women—our boys camp is on the way August 7-13, 2011!  As with our established girls program, our carefully considered curriculum and professional, trained counselors will help our campers have a fantastic experience.
Boys camp fun!
Our Kupugani boys pilot session held in 2009 was an unqualified success. One pilot camper put it best, saying: "Thank you for a great time. At first I wasn't so sure about going to camp. [But in just four days] my trust level in people went up and my doubts about myself went away. The camp site was clean, living conditions were great, food was good, and overall it was the highlight of my summer." With our upcoming full boys in August, our excellent male staff will again be able to guide the boys through team building, empowering activities, and just plain fun. They'll have big fun, big adventure, and big challenges! Registration Open for Mother Daughter Weekend 2011

Last year's second annual Mother Daughter Weekend provided another fantastic opportunity for moms and daughters to reinforce the motherly bonds and to connect with other mothers and daughters.  Kupugani's relaxing, natural environment, combined with team building and empowerment activities helped our participants celebrate the essential relationship between Mothers and Daughters.  Fun activities like pool time, dam jumping, and Ga Ga, also helped to deepen bonds.
Join us this August 19th-21st as we again provide a relaxing, natural environment to celebrate the essential relationship between mom and daughter.  For only $200 a pair ($50 for each additional daughter) and available activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, and team building activities, the relationship with your daughter(s) is bound to grow deeper.  Registration has already begun; spaces for this special camp session are again limited.  If you have a daughter or daughters aged 6-14 and you'd like to register or get more information, please contact us via our toll-free line (866-471-4616) or by e-mail at info@campkupugani.com if you have any questions!
