DEPARTMENT POSITION SALARY

Engineering/Fleet Mechanic $25.96/Hr.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: To be selected for a position, an applicant must (1) meet the minimum requirements of the job posting, (2) pass a written exam (if applicable), (3) satisfy a background check (which may be extensive), and (4) pass an oral interview, during which the interview will further evaluate the applicants qualifications. (5) Transcripts must be submitted upon candidate processing if the position requires a degree.

Internal Applicants, who are current employees must have worked in their current position long enough to pass probation to be eligible to apply for the position. In addition, applicants are also subjected to an internal investigation which includes an evaluation of their work record, safety and discipline records, their performance assessments and time and attendance records (including late starts and early quits) for the preceding 12 months. (Authorized absences will not be included for purposes of assessing whether attendance is satisfactory.)

EDUCATION:

High School Graduate or GED equivalent is required.

EXPERIENCE:

General knowledge of Roadway Maintenance operations is desired.

THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND ABILITIES ARE REQUIRED:

The incumbent must possess a minimum of eight (8) years of mechanical experience in automotive, truck, and/or equipment repair and maintenance.

Must posses a Class "A" Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with endorsements of air brakes, tanker, and trailer combination or a valid "A" CDL permit at the time of interview with the above endorsements, and the ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within thirty (30) days of employment.

The incumbent must successfully pass the ISTHA Mechanic test with a minimum score of sixty five percent (65%) or currently hold an ASE Master Mechanic Certification.

Must have sufficient tools as required by the Authority.

Incumbent must be able to lift 100 pounds.

The ability to be on call and work hours required for the position.

The incumbent must acquire and maintain all Federal, State and Local Certifications or Licenses required to perform the duties and tasks of the position.

MECHANIC

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION PURPOSE:

Repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, salt spreaders, snow plows, construction equipment and machinery commonly used by the Authority in maintenance of roadway and structures.

NATURE AND SCOPE:

Incumbent to be highly skilled in all areas of automotive repair and maintenance, including the inspection of automotive and related equipment, as well as the participation in the documentation processes. The incumbent in this class should be skilled and have a thorough understanding of the functions of complex automotive components and diagnostics.

The incumbent will perform all phases of repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, salt spreaders, snow plows, construction equipment and similar machinery commonly used by the Authority in the maintenance of the roadway and structures.

The incumbent will be responsible for having the knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and equipment used in the automotive/equipment repair field, as well as the knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions used in the mechanical trade.

The Mechanic provides the ability and skills to use tools, machines, and equipment commonly used in the Automotive repair field, as well as the operation of electric arc, M.I.G., and acetylene welding equipment.

The incumbent is responsible for handling the inspections of automotive, trucks, and other equipment for serviceability, in conjunction with the preparation of any necessary reports.

Also, the Mechanic may be requested to work various shift times, as needed by the Authority. The Mechanic may be required to attend training sessions both on-site or off-site.

In emergency situations, performs miscellaneous duties, such as snow and ice control, general traffic control, and is subject to call out for emergency maintenance service at all times.

4. Performs inspections of automotive, trucks, and other maintenance equipment as needed.

5. Capable of using and analyzing the Parts & Service Manuals in use at the Authority.

6. Performs other duties as assigned or directed by Supervisor.

POSITION POSTING

CIVILIAN CALL-TAKER

POSITION PURPOSE:

Monitors and coordinates traffic from multiple telephone lines, including the TDD and State Police radio and fax. Handles inquiries for directions and/or information from general public, other law enforcement bodies, and Authority personnel. Will enter incident information via the CAD computer for action by the Dispatch Center staff. Documents oversize vehicle information from toll plazas and updates other daily traffic information from the District 15 troopers in the field. Issues Citation, Warning and Motor Carrier inspection Books to District 15 Troopers.

DIMENSIONS:

Answer multiple inside/outside telephone calls 300/shift

Enter Data in Dispatch CAD Computer 560/week

Maintain various information logs 35 entries/day

Monitor State Police radio channel 3 channels

Monitor State police fax 1 fax machine

NATURE & SCOPE:

The incumbent reports to the Communication Supervisor(s). The position requires working any shift (twenty-four (24) hours/day, seven (7) days per week) including weekends and Holidays. The incumbent will handle telephone traffic from inside and outside the Tollway over several telephone lines. Records information from general public reporting incidents that occur on/off the Tollway System, persons searching for abandoned vehicles, logs toll plaza oversize vehicle permits, handles after-hour package deliveries and building security. Logs and updates varied State Police activity into the CAD computer, update different manuals and court information. The incumbent must be an individual who portrays a courteous and professional image of the Tollway and the Illinois State Police. The incumbent will be in contact with a multitude of people of different personalities not only via a telephone line but also in person. Individuals must therefore possess patience and understanding. The position also requires knowledge of the geographical layout of the Tollway system. The incumbent will be trained limited CAD Telecommunicator functions as they will process information given to them by different sources that will require entry into the CAD computer for action by members of the Dispatch Center staff. Many phone calls may require giving directions to patrons traveling the Tollway. The incumbent will be updating information relating to oversize vehicles, State Police manuals, accident and field reports, and handling all after-hour package deliveries. Will also log persons entering and leaving the Administration building after hours for security reasons.

Must be high school graduate or equivalent. Incumbent must have the ability to type 40 words per minute. Successfully pass the following tests: reading comprehension, map reading, typing from a spoken narrative and memory test. Good written and oral communication skills required. It is required that the incumbent obtains IWIN and LEADS Certification within probationary period (six months) with rectification every two years. Incumbent is required to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays. It is required that the incumbent be available to be on call 24 hours a day. The incumbent must successfully pass a complete background check.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES;

1. Answer telephone lines and give/receive information to/from the public, media, other law enforcement agencies and Tollway personnel regarding road conditions, directions, and general information. Will be required at times, to enter such information into the Dispatch CAD computer.

2. Will perform the following: enter troopers’ sick calls into Duty Log upon direction by the State Police Shift Commander, update troopers’ accident and field report via the CAD computer and also in a specific log, log all arrest information called into the desk by troopers, transcribe towed/abandoned vehicle information and pass on release of such vehicles to the Vehicle Information Bureau.

3. Will handle all after-hour package deliveries, issue after-hour Tollway vehicle permits, update various manuals and court information when required, coordinate after-hours off-duty police business, i.e. Assistant State’s Attorney, accidents, investigations, etc. Will be responsible for after-hour security access to the Administration building.

4. Other duties as assigned.

5. Must be able to obtain LEADS certification within first six months of employment
