Check the Method 2011!
YCA is pleased to invite you to the 2011 session of its annual summer camp, Check the Method! Like past years of Check the Method, the program this year will bring together 20-30 young writers from all across the city of Chicago and the suburbs to explore writing technique and practice. It will utilize Chicago and its rich tradition of working class literature as a source for inspiration. In addition, Check the Method will encourage and push writers toward new work, thorough revision and broadening of the reading palette. Kevin Coval leads the camp, with guest workshopping and teaching from Robbie Q. Telfer. Check the Method is sponsored by Young Chicago Authors and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
This year, for the first time ever(!), in addition to a session for youth writers, there will be a session for teachers. We will discuss spoken word pedagogy, how to organize a youth community, and how start a reading series of your own.
Youth Week at the Art Institute: July 25-29 Teacher Week at the Jane Addams Hull House: Aug. 1-5
Information about Check the Method, including the application and work from past Check the Methods, can be found here.
Hope to see you there!
Summer Wordplay
Thanks to some of YCA's dedicated alums, Chicago's longest-running youth open mic will be continuing into the summer!
Wordplay happens every Tuesday at YCA headquarters (1180 N. Milwaukee) and runs from 6 - 8:30, with a workshop, open mic, and lots of Chicago's best talent. Whether you are coming out to practice new poems, get inspired, or just make new friends, it's a weekly event that young poets can't afford to miss. Hope to see you there!
