December 10th We are Girl/Friends! at The Newberry Library

Below is an excerpt from the "We are Girl/Friends" book ( a group  poem written by the Girl/friends students).

I Am Safe When

I’m alone
I’m walking with a crowd
I’m with my family
My mother is around
I’m home
I’m in my room
The police are around
I’m in my neighborhood
I’m at church
I’m at school
I’m at Girl/Friends
I’m in my safe space
I’m in my mind

"In this collection you will find poems about girls celebrating their beauty, voicing the pain of loss as a result of violence, speaking their minds, and boldly declaring who they are... You will find photographs that document how they see themselves and the world though their own eyes.We hope that as you go through the pages of this book, you too will be moved by this next generation of young women leaders. "
