Abstinence only? Heck no!
When it comes to reproductive health, ignorance is not bliss. High rates of HIV, STDs and unplanned pregnancies are evidence enough for us to fight for information for Illinois' youth, who are being kept in the dark about safe sex. Right now public schools are free to teach harmful, abstinence-only sex education programs, but we have a chance to change this fact.
Tell your representatives to vote "YES" on HB 3027!
Legislation that would establish comprehensive sexual health education in Illinois schools passed the full Illinois Senate by a vote of 30-28. HB 3027 is now headed to the Illinois House with less than a week remaining in legislative session. We need your help to make it a reality for Illinois youth!
HB 3027 protects young women and men and helps them make responsible decisions. The bill requires that public schools, when they offer sexual health education classes, provide age appropriate, medically accurate comprehensive sexual health education classes. The bill stresses that abstinence is the safest choice for preventing HIV and STDs. It also empowers parents by allowing them to remove their children from classes if they don't want them to participate.
