Promoting Mental Wellness and Resiliency in the African American Community

Promoting Mental Wellness and Resiliency in the African American Community

MEE Productions Inc. is offering organizations in the Chicago area a half-day or full-day communications workshop/professional development session based on its recent research report, Moving Beyond Survival Mode: Promoting Mental Wellness and Resiliency as a Way to Deal with Urban Trauma.  The hands-on, interactive workshop will help CBOs, providers and others raise community-wide awareness about mental wellness and influence existing attitudes and community norms.

The workshop includes information about how after school programs, mental health service providers, CBOs, job training programs, schools and others can strengthen the protective factors and promote the existing psychological strengths that will allow low-income urban youth to thrive (versus merely survive) in spite of the challenging realities of urban life.

The workshop will help providers understand the power of both peer influence and adult/parent involvement in positively influencing youth behavior. Many community access points must become involved in the conversation about mental wellness, and this workshop addresses how to effectively engage and mobilize members of the community. Attendees will learn how to use MEE's multi-component toolkit, which includes the kind of culturally relevant materials that are needed in order to begin this community-wide dialogue..

Others who will benefit from the workshop: staff from public health agencies and institutions; community-based program directors; public health researchers; faith-based institutions; and criminal justice/law enforcement personnel.

MEE will help participants get a better understanding of the worldview of youth and families who require mental health support, and be prepared to more effectively receive and interact with them, in a culturally-relevant manner. In the workshop, we will address issues such as:
  • The Stressors that Impact the Mental Health of Urban Families
  • How Young Adults are Coping (Negative & Positive) with Stress and Trauma
  • What are the Signs of a Mental/Emotional Issue?
  • What Protective Factors/Psychological Strengths Can We Build On?
  • Barriers to Accessing Local Mental Health Services/Treatment
  • Identifying and Mobilizing Community Assets
  • Creating a Support Group/Supporting Environment for Adolescents
  • How to Help African American Families Talk About/Deal With Mental Health Issues
